Girdle purse from Dordrecht

sale

Dated 1400-1450

Medieval girdle purse based on a find from Dordrecht (inv. no. 6801.216.002, (Obročníková, 2025)). This type of girdle purse with a flap and wings has been in use since the end of the 14th century. This particular example is dated to the early 15th century based on the embroidered trefoil that attaches the clasp to the flap.

This type of decoration can also be found in Czech painting, specifically in a detail of the painting The Flagellation of Christ - epitaph of Markéta, wife of Jan Ratold, dated after 1431 (the detail of the pouch can be seen when zooming in on the painting or when viewing it in person :) ).

The purse has two main pockets, accessible from the inside of the purse, and three additional poouchlets on the front panel of the back pocket, closed with drawstrings. On the back of the purse, there is an additional flat pocket, just like on the original.

The pouch is made of vegetable tanned cowhide leather, with the inner soft light-colored parts made of fat-tanned deerskin. The entire pouch is hand-sewn using linen thread. The outer pouches are sewn with a cross-stitch, as was done with medieval originals.

This product is part of experiments for a dissertation at the University of Hradec Králové, and by purchasing it, you are supporting further research. The front pocket has a relatively tight opening, but it can be assumed that its functionality will improve with use. The defect is reflected in the price.
